Daniele Mana aka Vaghe Stelle annuncia l’uscita di “Abstract Speed + Sound”, nuovo mini LP in arrivo a Luglio nientemeno che sulla Other People di Nicolas Jaar. A darne l’annuncio è la stessa etichetta discografica del dj e producer americano (di origini però cilene) che da meno di 24 ore ha reso disponibile sul proprio profilo ufficiale soundcloud l’ascolto del primo estratto, “Multiple Concentric Hexagons”.
Per ammissione dello stesso Vaghe Stelle, già membro del collettivo Gang of Ducks e recentemente promotore della crew One Circle (divisa con Lorenzo Senni e A:RA) nonché protagonista della “nuova scena” torinese (leggasi Club To Club Festival ed il progetto The Italian New Wave) questo mini album punta a porsi in diretta linea di prosecuzione con i lavori precedenti approfondendo però il legame, molto forte, tra le nuove forme sperimentali di musica elettronica e la visione dell’arte del movimento futurista italiano del primo ventennio del XX secolo, in costante movimento tra cinema, pittura, scultura e, appunto, musica. Lo stesso nome del primo estratto, “”Multiple Concentric Hexagons”, è un riferimento ad uno dei più grandi pittori / scultori / artisti del movimento divisionista e poi futurista italiano, Giacomo Balla:
Taking its title from painter Giacomo Balla’s iconic 1913-14 work, the EP draws a critical line between contemporary digital music practices and the century-old Italian Futurist movement. Where Futurism obsessed over the automobile and its unprecedented speed, Daniele fixates on the newer precedent set by digital networks, how they move our bodies and how our representations move through them. The cover art immediately speaks to this: a digital self-portrait of the artist stylized atemporally as a Nefertiti bust and/or The Man Who Fell to Earth.
Following themes of self-making and reimagining, Daniele draws from a canon of definitive Italian films for his palette of fluttering, disembodied vocal samples. Highly processed, not exactly dehumanized, they’re evocative, yet impossible to trace—towing deep into the uncanny valley. Their haphazard arrangement and asexual timbre react to temper any masculine swagger boasted in the rhythm of these tracks. Rocky drums splash and batter like objects in viscous space, while shards of vocality replete the distortion. Follow the slipping downbeat of “Hyper” or the tragic syncopation of “Multiple Concentric Hexagons”.
