Pioniere del genere di origine sudafricana Gqom, DJ Lag ha annunciato l’uscita del suo nuovo EP Trip To New York. La release, ispirata da un viaggio a New York per la Red Bull Music Academy, sarà disponibile a partire dal 14 Luglio via WhatsApp, e basterà lasciare i proprio dati sul sito di DJ Lag per ricevere l’EP.

A proposito della genesi del Gqom, ha raccontato DJ Lag in una recente intervista:

I first heard this kind of sound when Naked Boys put out a track in around 2010 or 2011. They were the first to create a broken beat track in this way. At that stage there was no name for this sound. It was a track and not a genre. I began trying to create something like that sound. In my case coming from a hip-hop background I was using different sample packs to create that kind of a vibe. There were a few producers playing around and soon there was a new genre called GQOM.

Trip To New York è composto da tre tracce: la title track omonima, la B-side Khonkolo ed un remix di quest’ultima ad opera dell’affiliato della Hyperdub Okzharp.
