Chi si nasconde dietro l’eclettico progetto Not Lars è Lars Netzel, artista svedese che, dopo varie collaborazioni con le band indie Helm e Synthpop Planet R, decise qualche tempo fa di isolarsi in studio per dare vita alla sua personale, contemplativa e straordinaria visione musicale.
Dopo un attesa durata circa due anni e mezzo intervallata dall’uscita, nel Dicembre 2012, del singolo Worry, il cui video interamente auto-prodotto dallo stesso Not Lars attirò l’attenzione ed il consenso di migliaia di ascoltatori, eccoci finalmente a The Gloomy and the Goony, opera in 10 tracce che racchiude al suo interno un insieme di ambientazioni complete che ruotano intorno ad una nostalgica Trip-hop music (definita dallo stesso Lars “Dreamwave” o “Synth/indie”).
Un album, questo The Gloomy and the Goony, che merita particolare attenzione per il fatto che per tutta la sua durata riesce a destreggiarsi e distinguersi dal suono comune che viene costantemente partorito dai numerosi electronic producer mantenendo una linea elegante, come la traccia di apertura Some Real, che poi va trasformandosi in qualcosa di malinconicamente affasciante (vedasi la traccia I’ll Say It With Synthpop Then). Presente, a dar maggior risalto, anche una “album version” della stessa Worry.
Non è un caso, insomma, che Worry abbia riscosso un discreto successo e non è un caso che The Gloomy and the Goony, uscito veramente da poco, sia un album che vi consigliamo di ascoltare e comprare.

\\\\\ Ciao Not Lars, benvenuto su Tsinoshi Bar. Partiamo dall’inizio: presentati e parlaci un pò di te!
Grazie! Bene..mi chiamo Lars Netzel e vivo appena fuori Gothemburg, in Svezia. Not Lars è il mio progetto solista quindi…faccio tutto da me!
\\\\\ Finalmente è uscito il tuo primo album. Come ti senti?
Un po’ orgoglioso ed un po’ spaventato. Hai detto bene tu “finalmente”…Dalla prima nota registrata ad oggi sono passati quasi due anni e mezzo! Come nella vita in due anni si possono avere degli alti e dei bassi, così capita nella musica, se è parte di te costantemente. Insomma, l’Album è stata una “cosa mia” per così tanto tempo ed ora è fruibile a tutti, sia chi lo ama sia a chi lo odia o a chi lo ignora. E’ una sensazione strana…
\\\\\ Da cosa deriva il nome “Not Lars”?
Uhm, è una cosa particolare…Stavo cercando un moniker quando qualcuno mi disse “Che ne dici di chiamarti solo Lars?”. Io risposi d’istinto: “No, non Lars!”. Rimase li sospeso quel “Not Lars” e più ci pensavo, più prendeva senso come moniker. Lo puoi interpretare in così tanti modi e, visto che nelle mie intenzioni vorrei che gli ascoltatori fossero in grado di fare proprie le mie canzoni, Not Lars è perfetto. E’, insomma, la negazione o il rifiuto di “Lars”.
\\\\\ Quale musica ti piace suonare ed in quale contesto ti piace suonarla?
E’ musica elettronica ed emozionale. Ci sono milioni di sotto generi ma a me piace chiamarla Dreamwave/synth/indie. Volevo che “The Gloomy and the Goony” fosse qualcosa che diventasse “personale” per gli ascoltatori, qualcosa che non fosse basato sul costruire l’ennesimo album pop.
\\\\\ Qual’è stato il tuo primo contatto con la musica elettronica?
Credo sia avvenuto probabilmente con i Depeche Mode
\\\\\ Parliamo ora dell’ambito produttivo: come approcci il lavoro in studio? che strumenti usi? Cosa pensi del rapporto Analogico vs Digitale nell’ambito della produzione?
altro. Il perché? Semplice: non li conosco così bene come Cubase. Le mie sonorità al momento sono un mix tra synth digitali, soft synths e alcune macchine analogiche tipo la kore MS10 e la rollano TB-303. Se sento qualcosa, qualche suono che mi piace, lo uso. Se poi è qualcosa che ha knobs e faders ancora meglio, è più facile essere creativi.
\\\\\ Quando avremo il piacere di sentirti in Italia?
Spero davvero di passare ma al momento non ho piani a riguardo.

\\\\\ Hello Not Lars. Welcome to tsinoshi bar. Let’s start from the beginning, briefly tell us about you!
Thank you! Alright, my name is Lars Netzel and live just outside of Gothenburg in Sweden. Not Lars is my solo project so…it’s all by me!
\\\\\ Finally comes your first album, how do you feel?
Both proud and scared. As you said, “finally”… from the first note recorded until today it’ s been about 2.5 years. In that time you have ups and downs and it becomes something you live with constantly. It’s been private for so long and now it’s out there for people to love, hate or ignore. Very strange…
\\\\\ Tell Us something: Why the name “Not Lars”?
Yeah, I guess it’s a bit weird… When I was trying to come up with a name someone said “How about just Lars?” and I went “No, not Lars”. It grew on me and the more I thought about it the more it made sense. You can interpret it in so many ways and since I want listeners to be able to make the songs their own, Not Lars is perfect. It’s the ultimate opposite or reject of “Lars”.
\\\\\ What kind of music do you play and in what context you put it?
It’s electronic and emotional music. There are about a million different genres around but I usually say it’s Dreamwave/Synth/Indie. I wanted The Gloomy And The Goony to be something that can be personal for the listener and always had the aim to make something that wasn’t just another pop album.
\\\\\ What was your first contact with electronic music?
It was probably Depeche Mode.
\\\\\ Let’s talk about the production side: as you approach the production? What tools do you use? What do you think of the relationship Analog vs Digital in production?
Ok, for recording I’ve been using Cubase for as long as I can remember. It’s what I’m used to and I always feel very restricted when I try other applications… because I don’t know them as well.
When it comes to the actually sound sources it’s a mix of digital synths, soft synths and a few analogue mashines like Korg MS10 and Roland TB-303. If I hear something I like, I’ll use it. I tend to like something with physical knobs and sliders though. It’s easier to be creative.
